Science Scholarships

Waikato has more scholarships per student than any other university in New Zealand. There are scholarships and grants for many student groups, including secondary school leavers, Māori students and adult students, and in many subject areas.

DairyNZ Undergraduate Scholarships

Closing date: 07 Dec 2017

For students intending to enrol full-time in an undergraduate degree in a dairy related area at Lincoln, Massey or the University of Waikato in the year following application. The Scholarship will be paid towards tuition fees and will have a value of up to $6,325 for up to four years.

Energy Education Trust Undergraduate Scholarship

Closing date: 04 Apr 2018

For students who are enrolled full-time at any level (and including) first and honours year of relevant degree and are undertaking study in the fields of science, economics, or engineering and related fields with specific interests in energy matters. The Scholarship will have a value of $5,000.

AECOM David A. Burns Award in Engineering Geology

Closing date: 01 Sep 2018

For students currently enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and undertaking ERTH352-18A - Engineering Geology in A semester 2018. Students must also be intending to enrol part- or full-time in a masters degree in Earth Sciences in the year following application.

Anne Shannon Scholarship

Closing date: 31 Mar 2017

For students who are studying towards a degree with a major in Biological Sciences or are enrolled in a specified programme including a major in Biological Sciences at the University of Waikato. The scholarship will have a value of $2,500 per year for two years.

Brian Perry Charitable Trust Undergraduate Scholarship in Science & Engineering

Closing date: 15 Jul 2018

For students who are enrolled in the second year of full-time study towards an undergraduate degree, in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Waikato. The scholarship will have a value of up to $5,000.

CRF Heinold Memorial Award

Closing date: 31 Oct 2016

For students who are enrolled in the second or third year of a BSc(Tech) or BE(Hons) and are enrolled in as least one of the prescribe placement papers as outlined in the regulations. The scholarship will have a value of up to $2,000 plus a placement in the area of meat production.

DairyNZ Masters Scholarship

Closing date: 10 Aug 2018

For students who are enrolled in the final year or have completed a Bachelors degree in Science, agricultural science, agricultural business or economics and are eligible to enrol in a masters degree at a New Zealand University. Up to three scholarships of $30,000 will be available each year + tuition fees.

Closing date: 15 Jul 2017

For students enrolled full-time in the third year of undergraduate study towards a Bachelor of Science with a major in Physics. The scholarship will have a value of $500.

Hamilton Zoo - University of Waikato Science & Engineering Scholarship

Closing date: 01 Sep 2017

For students who are enrolled full-time and have completed the second year of the Bachelor of Science (Technology) degree. The scholarship will have a value of $14,000 and a one year placement with the Hamilton Zoo.

University of Waikato HEBUST Scholarship

Closing date: 30 Nov 2017

For students transitioning from HEBEI University of Technology (China) to the University of Waikato to undertake full-time study towards a Bachelor of Science majoring in Materials Science. Applicants must have achieved at least a B+ Grade Point Average over the last 1.5 years of study at HEBEI University of Technology. The value of the award will be up to $15,000.

Whanganui River Enhancement Trust Scholarship

Closing date: 17 Nov 2017

For students who are enrolled full-time and are undertaking research towards a Masters thesis, Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma. Candidates must be resident in New Zealand for the tenure of the scholarship and their research should relate to the Whanganui River Catchment.

Broad Memorial Fund

Closing date: 31 Mar 2018

For students who are enrolled in the thesis year of a MSc, MSc(Research), MPhil or PhD qualification in Earth Sciences. The value of the scholarship will vary.

For students who are enrolled in the final year or have completed a Bachelors degree in Science, agricultural science, agricultural business or economics and are eligible to enrol in a masters degree at a New Zealand University. Dr Stella Frances Memorial Scholarship

Closing date: 15 Dec 2017

For students who are enrolled or are intending to enrol in the final year of a masters degree at the University of Waikato and are undertaking research that applies to the conservation or environmental issues in the Waikato region. The scholarship will have a value of up to $5,000.

Closing date: 15 Jul 2017

For students who are enrolled in full-time study towards an MSc or a PhD with a thesis topic in Biophysics or Cortical Modelling. The scholarship will have a value up to $5,000 for one year.

Golden Plover Wetland Research Award

Closing date: 01 Nov 2018

For students who are enrolled part- or full-time in a honours or masters degree at any New Zealand University and are conducting research in any aspect of ecology or management of wetlands. The scholarship will have a value of up to $1,000.

Hilary Jolly Memorial Scholarship

Closing date: 29 Apr 2018

For students who will be enrolled or enrolling full in a masters or doctorate at the University of Waikato in the field of freshwater ecology in New Zealand. The scholarship has a value of up to $6,000 at Master’s for one year and $15,000 per year at doctoral that will not exceed three years.

NZ Agricultural Fieldays Sir Don Llewellyn Scholarship

Closing date: 08 May 2018

For New Zealand citizens and permanent residents enrolling at master’s or doctoral level study at the University of Waikato. Candidates must be undertaking research with a focus on the agricultural sector. The value of this Scholarship will be up to $22,000.

RHT Bates Postgraduate Scholarship

Closing date: 01 Sep 2018

At the time of application students must be engaged in postgraduate studies (honours, masters or doctorate). Students in their final year of undergraduate study are ineligible to apply. See application for more eligibility criteria.

Science and Engineering Masters Fees Awards

Closing date: 15 Mar 2017

For students enrolling full-time in the first year MSc (research), MSc, MSc (Tech) ME or MEnvSci programme in the faculty of Engineering. Part-time applicants may be considered but any scholarship awarded will be on a pro-rata basis. The Scholarship will have a value of up to $2,000.

Terry Healy Memorial Award

Closing date: 31 Oct 2018

For students who are enrolled or are intending to enrol, part- or full-time in a masters or doctoral degree in Earth Sciences, and who are not receiving other awards providing significant funds or substantial financial assistance under a research contract. The value of the award will vary.

Tess Embling Memorial Scholarship

Closing date: 16 Feb 2018

For full and part-time students, who are enrolling or have enrolled in the first year if a masters degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The scholarship will have a value of up to $1,500.

The Hicks Scholarship

Closing date: 23 Aug 2014

For students who are enrolled or intend to enrol at any New Zealand University to undertake the research portion of their Masters degree in agriculture, horticulture, arborculture, viticulture or animal husbandry. The Scholarship will have a value of up to $15,000.

University of Waikato Adams Centre High Performance Doctoral Scholarship

Closing date: 22 Feb 2018

For students who are intending to enrol full-time in a PhD and can demonstrate how their intended research will align with supporting the development performance of youth athletes. The Scholarship will support one doctoral candidate while they undertake research at the Adams Centre for High Performance, Tauranga.

University of Waikato Department of Conservation Freshwater Mussel Scholarship

Closing date: 15 Sep 2018

Expressions of Interest are sought from students who have been accepted in to and will be enrolling full-time in a MSc(Research) or the thesis year of their MSc(Research) and have a particular interest in the specific research area outlined in the regulations.

University of Waikato George Mason Charitable Trust Scholarship

Closing date: 30 Nov 2017

Expressions of Interest are sought from students who are intending to enrol full-time in a 120-point masters thesis or a PhD and have a particular interest in one of the specific research areas outlined in the regulations.

Whanganui River Enhancement Trust Scholarship

For students who are enrolled full-time and are undertaking research towards a Masters thesis, Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma. Candidates must be resident in New Zealand for the tenure of the scholarship and their research should relate to the Whanganui River Catchment.
