Science & Engineering Scholarships  

Waikato has more scholarships per student than any other university in New Zealand. There are scholarships and grants for many student groups, including secondary school leavers, Maori students and adult students, and in many subject areas.

Entrance

Bachelor of Engineering Fees Scholarship

The Bachelor of Engineering Fees Scholarships is open to applicants who will enrol at the University of Waikato for the first time. Applicants should be intending to enrol in the first full-time year of a Bachelor of Engineering degree in the Faculty of Science & Engineering or in the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.

Science Admission Fees Scholarship

This Scholarship is open to applicants who will enrol at the University of Waikato for the first time. Applicants should be intending to enrol in the first full-time year of a BSc or BSc(Tech) degree in the Faculty of Science & Engineering.

Undergraduate

Anne Shannon Scholarship

The Scholarship was established in 2000 through an endowment by Dr and Mrs Shannon of Hamilton. It is for candidates heading into their second year of a Biological Sciences major and is normally awarded every two years.

Brian Perry Charitable Trust Undergraduate Scholarship

The Brian Perry Charitable Trust Undergraduate Scholarship in Science and Engineering will be awarded annually to assist participants enrolling in their second year of fulltime study towards an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, at the University of
Waikato.

CRF Heinold Memorial Award

The C R F Heinold Memorial Award was established in 1989 in memory of the late C R F Heinold and awarded in for the first time in 1991. The C R F Heinold Memorial Award is made annually to a BSc (Tech) or MSc (Tech) student to assist him or her to carry out project work in the area of meat production as part of the requirements for the degree. The work is to be carried out at AgResearch.

Energy Education Trust Undergraduate Scholarship

The Energy Education Trust Undergraduate Scholarship was established by the Energy Education Trust of New Zealand to assist students to undertake full-time study in the fields of science, economics or engineering and related fields but with a specific interest in energy as it relates to the energy needs of New Zealand.

Fisher and Paykel Healthcare (FPH) Scholarship in Physics

Funded by Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, the purpose of these scholarships is to encourage talented students to study theoretical physics and/or biophysics. The scholarships are aimed at undergraduates about to enter their second or third year towards a BSc with a major in Physics.

Genesis Energy Environmental Science/Planning Scholarship

The purpose of the award is to assist students to undertake full-time study in the field of environmental science at the University of Waikato. Applicants are expected to be enrolled at a second-year or higher level in an Environmental Science programme or in related programmes of studies.

Hamilton Zoo Studentship

The Hamilton Zoo and the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Waikato recognise that they have mutual interests in the education of students and the wider community, about the operation and the role of zoos. To this end, both parties collaborate in providing an opportunity for students of the BSc (Technology) degree to gain work experience at the Zoo. The work experience takes the form of a studentship for an agreed length of time.

Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Scholarship

The specific goals of offering the scholarship are to promote student interest in the application of engineering principles to the ongoing development of the oil and gas industry, provide awareness of the petroleum industry in New Zealand and to encourage students to seek career opportunities in New Zealand within the oil and gas industry. The Scholarship shall be awarded for part-time or full-time study in the field of Engineering in their 3rd or subsequent year at the University of Waikato.

University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarship

Summer Research Scholarships will be offered in specific areas of research approved by the University of Waikato's Research Committee. Applicants should be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, a final-year honours or a first-year masters degree and are expected to have completed at least three years of undergraduate study.

Waikato Regional Council – Dame Te Atairangikaahu Scholarship

This Scholarship was established in 1991 to mark the 25th anniversary of the accession of Te Arikinui, Dame Te Atairangikaahu. Two Scholarships shall normally be awarded annually on the basis of academic merit to Māori students who are enrolled on a full-time basis, at undergraduate level, in the resource management or environmental fields at the University of Waikato.

Graduate

Broad Memorial Fund

The fund is in memory of Dr John Broad and Philippa Broad who died in the Mount Erebus air disaster. Grants from the Fund will normally be made only to enrolled students who are currently undertaking research towards a Masters or Doctoral thesis in Earth Sciences. Research related to Antarctica has first priority.

Dr Stella Frances Memorial Scholarship

This Department of Conservation and Environment Waikato scholarship is for students in the final year of a masters degree. The Dr Stella Frances Scholarship is available to students studying environmental issues in the Waikato region.

The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage graduate-level study in
Biophysics at Waikato University.

Golden Plover Wetland Research Award

The Golden Plover Wetland Research Award is intended to support a student who is conducting original research into any aspect of the ecology or management of wetland at Masters level at any University in New Zealand.

Hilary Jolly Memorial Scholarship

The Scholarship shall be awarded for full-time study in the field of Freshwater Ecology at masters or doctoral level at the University of Waikato.

School of Science Masters Research Scholarships

The Faculty of Science & Engineering offered 10 School of Science Masters Research Scholarships in specific, predetermined areas of research. Each Scholarship is worth $5,000. Applicants were eligible to enrol for the first time in a Master of Science in B Semester 2013 and had an excellent academic record. Research topics included volcanology, coastal systems, geothermal systems, aquatic ecology, plant ecology, plant ecophysiology, chemistry, extremophile microbiology and Antarctic microbiology. A full list of research topics, supervisors and a description of each project is contained in the application form.

Science & Engineering Masters Fees Award

The Award is intended for students enrolling in their first year of a MSc, MSc(Tech) or ME programme commencing in December, March or July. Two rounds of awards are made, one for students starting in December or March, and another for students starting in July.

Tess Embling Memorial Scholarship

This Scholarship was established to commemorate the spirited life and achievements of Tess Embling. It is designed to encourage and reward students who share the passion and enthusiasm that Tess had for her studies. The Scholarship is open to students enrolling or enrolled in the first year of a Master’s degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Waikato.

Whanganui River Enhancement Trust Scholarship

The scholarships are open to students who are enrolled full-time in a Masters thesis, Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma and undertaking research that is relevant or applicable to the catchment of the Whanganui River.

Postgraduate

Master’s Scholarships in Bioprocessing

This project is part of a larger collaboration in the fermentation technology within New Zealand. The successful applicant should be eligible to enrol at the University of Waikato. Prior experience in operating fermenters and writing technical reports would be advantageous.

PhD Scholarship in Bioprocessing

This project is part of a larger collaboration in the fermentation technology within New Zealand. The successful applicant should be eligible to register for doctoral studies at the University of Waikato. Prior experience in operating fermenters, bioinformatics, handling of microorganisms and writing technical reports would be advantageous.
