Our Qualifications

Our qualifications are unique in design, internationally recognised and are offered in a vocationally safe, caring and stimulating environment. We offer a range of qualifications from undergraduate degrees which are valued for their general excellence in education and training, to master degrees which are tailored to provide great career opportunities or can lead well-performed graduates on to doctoral study. Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Putting into practice what you learn in your lectures is a major part of the University of Waikato Bachelor of Science degree. You will gain hands-on experience with some of the most up-to-date and high-tech laboratory equipment available.

Bachelor of Science (Technology) (BSc(Tech))

The Bachelor of Science (Technology) degree provides you with an opportunity to gain practical, relevant work experience as part of your undergraduate degree.  

Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons))

The Bachelor of Engineering with Honours is the basis for a professional career in engineering, and at Waikato you're provided with plenty of opportunities to apply what you’ve learnt in real-life work situations.

Certificate (Cert)

A certificate can help pave your way to future success, and is equivalent to the first year of study of a bachelors degree. It's a great way to gain an introductory qualification in a field of study.

Diploma (Dip)

A diploma is a short-term study option that can help pave your way to future success.


Master of Engineering (ME)

This research-focused degree is designed for graduates who wish to do further research and develop an innovative solution to an engineering question. Excellence in advanced engineering design, research and development skills are core features of the degree.

Master of Environmental Science (MEnvSci)

The Master of Environmental Sciences is intended for both science and engineering graduates who wish to further their knowledge and research skills in the area of Environmental Sciences – the scientific study of the interaction between humans and the environment.

Master of Science (MSc)

The Master of Science is valued for its flexibility and excellence, and can be tailored to suit your needs.  You can select your papers from a range of subjects and the mix of research and taught papers are customised to suit your interests and goals.

Master of Science (Research) (MSc(Research))

The Master of Science (Research) is an internationally-recognised qualification, suitable for students who want a complete research experience, coupled with taught papers.

Master of Science (Technology) (MSc(Tech))

A Master of Science (Technology) is normally a two-year advanced programme of study,  which builds on your knowledge from the BSc(Tech) degree.  It is similar to the MSc, but has two important differences - it combines taught papers with an applied or industrial based research thesis or dissertation, and it includes two papers on industrial technology and innovation.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) (BSc(Hons))

Entry into an honours year in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences or Materials and Processing is by invitation only to exceptional students.

Graduate Certificate (GradCert)

If you are looking to quickly acquire skills for a new career, a graduate certificate is a great option for you.

Graduate Diploma (GradDip)

Studying a graduate diploma helps you develop knowledge and skills in your chosen subject area which will enable you to undertake a new career or further study.

Higher Degrees

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is awarded by the University for research carried out under the supervision of at least two staff members.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

The Master of Philosophy is a one year research-based degree in which candidates undertake a programme of supervised research which critically investigates a topic of substance and significance.
