The University of Waikato Open Day is an invitation to the public to visit the Hamilton campus and experience a taste of university life. The free open day offers visitors a chance to attend mini lectures on a wide range of topics, get involved with interactive displays and view a range of fun activities and entertainment. Every year the Faculty of Science & Engineering offer an exciting range of lab displays, tours and mini lectures.

2011 University Open Day photos

The 2011 University Open Day, held on Friday May 13, went off with a bang. Students attending the Science & Engineering lab and marquee displays enjoyed interactive experiments and presentations, while others attempted to ‘walk on water’ at the Water Walkers activity.

  Students enjoy watching the reaction which occurs when cotton wool is burnt in liquid oxygen.

  Assoc Prof Chris Hendy shows students how a vortex is generated. In real life these vortex become tornados or whirl pools.

  Students got the chance to 'walk on water' after winning vouchers at mini-lecturers and from attending Science & Engineering lab displays.

  The Science & Engineering marquee was a hub of activity and the starting point for tours of the laboratories.

  A student holds a large, 32kg chunk of meteorite which was discovered in Antarctica, while his friend holds up a very light piece of pumice stone.
