NZIC Analytical Chemistry Competition

Teams of Year 13 students are set an analytical task, requiring accurate and careful analysis of an unknown substance. The results will be judged, with prizes and trophy awarded on the day.

Almost every year since 1996 the Chemistry Department has given the opportunity for Year 13 chemistry students to participate in the NZIC Analytical Chemistry Competition. Secondary schools in the University of Waikato catchment area (Waikato, Bay of Plenty, King Country), send teams of four to the University for one day in June each year.

Overall the competition enables keen Year 13 chemists to spend a day in the University laboratories and mix with peers from other schools. This also provides an opportunity for the teachers who accompany the students to meet with each other and University chemists. The emphasis on this occasion is experiencing what it is like to be in a University environment for the day, as much as in exercising chemical skills. 

Prizes

Prizes will be generously provided by Hill Laboratories. First place: $160, Second place: $120, Third place: $100, Fourth place: $80, and Fifth place: $40. There will also be a trophy for the first-placed team, sponsored by the Department of Chemistry. Certificates of participation will be awarded to all entrants.

NZIC Analytical Competition rules

• Contestants must be currently studying the Year 13 curriculum.
• No teacher help during the competition.
• The Judges’ decision is final.
