Science research through the lens: Tauranga Cafe Scientifique
Speaker(s): Andrew Marshall
Alimento, 72 First Avenue, Tauranga
21st May 2012
6.45pm for a 7.15pm start
Natural history, marine conservation and filmmaking will be the focus of the next Café Scientifique to be held in Tauranga.
Tauranga documentary filmmaker Andrew Marshall is the founder of Ocean International, an organisation being established to facilitate marine conservation through filmmaking and education.
At the May Café Scientifique he will discuss the opportunities for on-line learning as well as marine-focused, educational field-trips in the Bay, and his goal to instigate a filmmaking expedition vessel to roam globally.
He will also recount some of his experiences during expedition cruises to Greenland, Alaska, Antarctica, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.
Andrew is completing his Masters Degree in Science Communication and is in the post-production phase of his first 3D film. In Search of Zealandia is a natural history documentary telling the story of the large, ancient continent of Zealandia. The film also considers the conservation issues affecting flora and fauna in the subantarctic islands of New Zealand.
In 2006 Andrew received international recognition with his first short film, Plunge of the Penguins, which was selected to screen at film festivals around the world including the Green Film Festival in South Korea, Ecovision in Italy, and the Tokyo Environmental Film Festival in Japan.

Our Qualifications
Master of Science (Technology)
A MSc(Tech) is normally a two year coherent, advanced programme of study building on the specialisation of the BSc(Tech) degree, which combines taught papers with an applied or industrial based research thesis or dissertation. The programme includes two papers on industrial technology and innovation.
Welcome to Science & Engineering
Te Mātauranga Pūtaiao me te Pūkaha
The Faculty of Science & Engineering at the University of Waikato is world class and currently stands as the number one research science faculty in New Zealand.

Our Subjects
Biochemistry
Biochemistry is the explanation of life in chemical terms. It involves the study of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids, which are the fundamental molecules of life. Biochemists try to understand how these molecules interact in living organisms, in health and disease.

About the Faculty of Science & Engineering
Waikato is home to some of the most well-respected researchers in the science and engineering communities. The government's tertiary education research evaluations confirmed our chemistry and biology researchers, your lecturers, as the best in the country. Teaching and research in the Faculty is supported by first-class facilities and some of the world's most advanced laboratory equipment - like the Bruker Centre of Mass Spectrometry Excellence for investigating molecular structure, the largest collection of instruments of its type in New Zealand.

Dean's Welcome
The Faculty of Science & Engineering comprises the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth & Ocean Sciences and the School of Engineering. We offer strong academic programmes in these subject areas as well as in physics, materials and process technology, and science and technology education. We also offer a number of interdisciplinary subjects such as animal behaviour and environmental sciences.
The Faculty has truly gifted staff who perform radical and innovative research while fuelling the minds of energetic and talented students. It is a prime characteristic of a University degree to have teaching informed by research. Our staff have acquired national and international reputations in their subjects and place emphasis on maintaining a fruitful balance between the growth areas of scientific endeavour and the technological applications of that knowledge.
Professor Bruce Clarkson
Dean of Science & Engineering, University of Waikato
History of the Faculty
The University of Waikato was four years old in 1968 when the founding Vice-Chancellor Don Llewellyn received funding from the University Grants Committee (UGC) to build a School of Science.
As the science buildings took shape the four foundation professors, chemist Alex Wilson, who became the first dean, soil scientist John McCraw, biologist Jim Prendergrast, and physicist Bruce Liley, worked in a prefab hut preparing for the first intake of science students.
Prof McCraw recalls the expectations of those days: "They give you an ex-army hut, you go out to a rubbish tip to get your equipment, and you make a start. Then you get money as time goes on".
In March 1970, the new School of Science opened its doors and has since evolved from demonstrating random selection with pingpong ball experiments to launching rockets from the University’s rugby grounds.
