Department of Chemistry

Careers in chemistry

A knowledge of basic chemical principles is critically important in all branches of science and for a wide range of industries. Better building materials and textiles, improved medical materials such as prostheses and bone replacement materials, new alloys, functional carbohydrate based products or products from natural organisms, chemical catalysts, better environmental control, all rely on chemical expertise.

Not all chemistry jobs necessarily involve "wearing a white coat". With a University of Waikato degree majoring in chemistry under your belt, you will have the potential to cast a wide net in the market place, be it in technical, research-based or managerial-type chemistry positions, both in New Zealand and internationally.

The following listing of chemistry job types is not intended to be exhaustive, but does indicate a number of very diverse areas where Waikato University chemists are actively being employed.

Chemistry can be studied a undergraduate level with a major subject under the Bachelor of Science (BSc) or the Bachelor of Science(Technology) (BSc(Tech)) at Waikato University. We also encourage graduate (masters) and postgraduate doctorate) study. Check out the Department's research section for more information.
